Inside DrupalCon Rotterdam: AI Breakthroughs & Innovations IT & Marketing Leaders Need to Know
Drupal AI Initiative
Fresh from DrupalCon Rotterdam, our team of agency experts brings you an exclusive debrief on the most impactful developments, keynotes, and product releases shaping the Drupal ecosystem.
This Drupal AI webinar reflected on the key takeaways from DrupalCon Rotterdam 2026, with a focus on the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence within the Drupal ecosystem. The discussions highlighted a clear shift in the community, moving past the initial discovery phase of AI and focusing on practical deeper adoption, user experience, security, and the changing roles of developers.
Key Themes & Insights
1. AI adoption maturing / Real-world value
Both Paul Johnson and Martin Anderson-Clutz noticed a distinct shift at this year's Enterprise and Dev AI Summits. Unlike previous DrupalCon's where conversations centred around simply discovering AI, attendees and speakers are now commercial end-users sharing concrete experiences and extracting real business value from AI tools.
AI is increasingly viewed as a tool to eliminate routine tasks. Paul highlighted examples from Aalto University and the European Union, demonstrating how AI can be implemented smoothly.
One of the most effective ways to encourage AI use is through seamless integration. Aalto University successfully drove adoption by adding helpful tools, like translation buttons, into their CMS without explicitly labelling them as 'AI'.
AI integrations like Canvas AI were a constant topic of conversation at the conference, with the community embracing the technology and new methods of pagebuilding.
2. Trust, Control, and User Experience (UX)
Emma Horell emphasised the critical role of UX in helping new users navigate AI capabilities. Previously, a major deterrent to AI adoption has been the unpredictable 'prompt and pray' approach.
To alleviate data concerns and provide necessary guardrails, the new Drupal Context Control Centre gives web editors direct control over AI outputs. This ensures tasks remain reliable and accurate, which can also play a key role in future training programs like the upcoming 'Drupal in a Day' at DrupalCon Orlando in March 2027.
Emma noted that there has been a fundamental shift in how AI is perceived in Drupal, moving from a simple 'add-on' to a foundational enabler embedded directly beneath standard CMS processes.
3. Evolving Roles, Security, and Human Oversight
Martin discussed a massive industry shift where builders act more as 'Code directors' rather than traditional developers. This was evident in the AI-assisted creation of the new 'Summit' site template, though it still requires a learning curve.
Michael Anello stressed that as the Drupal AI module ecosystem grows, site protection is paramount. He highlighted three essential steps developers must take to secure their sites when deploying AI.
Despite the rapid automation, the community remains adamant about human oversight. The new official 'AI Inside Drupal Essentials' training (brought to life by DrupalEasy) focuses heavily on admin-facing responsible AI techniques, AI Content Review, and AI Validations to ensure humans remain the final decision-makers.
4. Looking Ahead
The pace of innovation continues to accelerate even beyond the conference. Paul Johnson touched on cutting-edge developments like 'Jev', a new AI model by TypeSafe AI (released in September 2026) designed to make structured software decisions rather than just generating conversational text, signaling the next potential wave of AI capabilities for Drupal in the near future.
