Postcards

Travel photos, sent as postcards. Just like the real thing, they’re dated when written and postmarked when sent, and they don’t always beat me home.

London, UK

The iconic dome of St Paul's Cathedral framed by autumn trees under a bright blue sky with scattered clouds.

Clear skies and falling leaves in the capital

Catching London on a rare, completely bright autumn afternoon. Did you know St Paul's Cathedral boasts a dome which is second in size only to St Peter’s Basilica in Rome? I visited its Golden Gallery in 2018. A stunning vantage point, but you need a head for heights - the railing feels uncomfortably low when you look at the drop below.

Rotterdam, The Netherlands

A photograph of the SS Rotterdam in Rotterdam, The Netherlands

All aboard for the Enterprise AI Summit!

Hosting an on-stage interview is exciting enough, but doing it on a former steamship is a definite first for me! I snapped this photo in the beautiful evening sunlight after wrapping up some last-minute planning. It’s an incredible venue, though a part of me wishes I could have sailed on her during her active service!

Rennes, France

Place du Champ-Jacquet square, Rennes

Old meets new in Rennes

As the capital of Brittany, Rennes has always been on my list to visit, mostly for its incredible mix of eras. Where else can you ride a brand new metro line (opened just four years ago) right into a city square straight out of the 1600s? The 17th-century half-timbered houses (pictured) at Place du Champ-Jacquet managed to survive the Great Fire of 1720, and they still stand remarkably proud today.

Mont-Saint-Michel, France

A view from the modern wooden pedestrian walkway curving directly toward the historic Mont-Saint-Michel island in France, under a clear blue sky.

A modern path to a medieval marvel

Mont-Saint-Michel looks like a scene straight out of a medieval fantasy, rising dramatically from the Normandy coast. However, the journey there is surprisingly modern. Opened in 2014, the striking footbridge, designed by Dietmar Feichtinger, replaced an old solid causeway to allow the tides to fully surround the island once again.

Mons, Belgium

Mons railway station concourse

A railway station that feels otherworldly

I must admit, I knew nothing about Mons' railway station before visiting the city on a day trip. Driving across the border from France, I had no idea quite how impressive a building I'd find waiting for me.

Rosenthaler Platz, Berlin, Germany

Rosenthaler Platz tiles are glazed with uranium oxide

Radioactive railway tiles

The vivid tiles at Berlin's Rosenthaler Platz U-Bahn station hide a surprising secret: due to being glazed with uranium oxide, they're radioactive! It's funny to think that thousands of commuters pass by every day without realising the tiles' uniqueness. Thankfully, the tiles pose no danger to the public.

Cherbourg, France

The skyline view of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin from Fort du Roule

A steep walk, but a worthwhile view

During a day trip to France, we decided to walk up to the Fort du Roule, perched on a steep hill above the city of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. It offered a fantastic view from the top, but the cloud-free sunny weather was both a blessing and a curse, as I forgot to apply suncream this morning.

Osborne House, Isle of Wight

Daffodils in the grounds of Osborne House, Isle of Wight

Signs of spring, fit for a royal

On a short trip to the Isle of Wight, I spotted daffodils appearing all over the impressive and imposing royal garden grounds of Osborne House. With the longer days and warmer weather, it's nice to know the clocks are about to leap forward!

Sigtuna, Sweden

Sigtuna, Sweden's oldest town

Visiting Sweden's oldest town

In complete contrast to last night's Melodifestivalen final at the Strawberry Arena, a visit to Sweden's oldest town, Sigtuna, offers a welcome period of wintry calm and quiet. A world away from Stockholm, despite being only 45+ minutes by public transport.

Geneva, Switzerland

Slow down sign in Geneva, Switzerland

Are ants slow?

This homemade road sign caught my attention today. The French wording 'Moins Vite' roughly translates to 'Slower' in English, hopefully in an effort to get drivers to slow down. After walking past the sign, though, I only had one thought: are ants slow?
